Before you are discharged from the clinic, you will be given a vaginoplasty kit with everything you need for dilations. Caring for your new vagina after surgery means learning a few gentle but important daily rituals. The two most essential ones are vaginal showers and dilations, which keep the area clean, open, and healthy. Think of these practices not as chores, but as ongoing support for healing, comfort, and long-term well-being.
Vaginal showers
Starting the day you are discharged from the hospital, you’ll begin vaginal washes using a syringe, saline solution, and a small amount of Betadine. At first, this may feel unfamiliar, but it quickly becomes a simple, soothing part of your routine as swelling reduces and mobility improves.
Here’s a simplified version of the process:
1. Fill a syringe with water or saline and a small squirt of Betadine (antiseptic)
2.Gently insert the cannula just inside the vaginal opening with no force and without being painful.
3.Push the plunger slowly to flush out secretions or surgical residue.
4.Repeat two or three times, making sure the final rinse is with clean water or saline only.
This process removes accumulated fluid and supports tissue healing by preventing infection and excess odor. As your tissues mature and the internal environment stabilizes, you will switch from Betadine to only saline or water, after medical clearance.
Important tip: Wearing loose cotton underwear, sleeping without underwear when possible, and choosing breathable fabrics will also help maintain a balanced recovery environment and reduce irritation.
The importance of dilations
Dilation maintains the internal diameter and depth over time. You’ll start with the smallest and change into the bigger one the second month once the fist dilators becomes easy to use. Learn how to use them safely with your physiotherapist or gender nurse before leaving the hospital. Never rush the insertion; go slowly, breathe, and always use a generous amount of lubricant.
Suggested frequency:
• First month: Three times a day
• Second month: Twice a day
• Third month: Once a day
• After one year: Once a week (or less, depending on sexual activity)
Mild discomfort is common at the beginning, especially when swelling is still present. What matters most is consistency. Skipping sessions can lead to tightening, reduced depth, or discomfort later, so it’s crucial to follow the schedule unless your medical team advises changes.
A daily ritual of connection
These practices are not only functional; they are a gradual way of reconnecting with your body. Many patients describe dilation and cleansing as grounding moments, where progress becomes tangible. With time, confidence grows, sensations change, and what once felt clinical becomes a calm, affirming part of life.
Gentle care, patience, and routine will support your healing and allow your body to adapt easily. Caring for your new vagina after surgery means learning a few gentle but important daily rituals such as vaginoplasty recovery tips and timeline.
